One Bite at a Time: Why Small Steps Create Big Change

You might've heard the old saying: “What’s the best way to eat an elephant?

Or maybe my role models growing up simply had weird analogies and allegories.

Regardless, the answer is: “One bite at a time.”

It’s a simple story, but it carries a powerful lesson.

When something feels overwhelming — whether it’s a huge project, a comeback from injury, or the daunting process of getting back in shape — the only way forward is through consistent small steps.

My Elephant: Getting Back Into Content

I’ll be honest — after a recent vacation, my rhythm for social media and content creation was off.

I came back to a busy schedule, full inbox (think Bruce Almighty replying to emails), and a creative routine that had been broken. Suddenly, the thought of getting “caught up” felt overwhelming.

My first instinct was to put it off until I had a big block of time or the “perfect” plan. But here’s the truth: waiting for perfect just meant doing nothing.

So I reminded myself of the elephant.Instead of stressing about finishing everything at once, I just focused on one post. One draft. One piece of content.

And that step — small as it was — got me back into momentum.

Your Elephant: Returning to Training

I see the same struggle in clients coming back from injury, time away from the gym, or even after falling off their nutrition plan.

They remember what they used to do.They want to jump right back to that level. But the gap between where they are now and where they want to be feels massive.

So they freeze. Or they quit.

The solution? One bite at a time.

  • Instead of rushing back to your old program, start with what your body can handle today.

  • Instead of overhauling your diet in a week, add one better habit at a time.

  • Instead of waiting until you feel fully “ready,” do something — anything — that moves you forward.

Something Beats Nothing

Here’s what matters most: a small, consistent step is always better than doing nothing at all.

That one workout. That one meal. That one piece of content. It all adds up.

And the more bites you take, the smaller the elephant becomes.

The Big Picture

Whether it’s me rebuilding my content routine or you returning from injury, the lesson is the same:

Don’t wait until you’re “ready.”Don’t wait for perfect.Just start.

Because forward — no matter how small — is still forward.
